My personal journey

In the summer of 2003 I found myself caring for my 1 & 3 year old children as well as giving end of life care for both of my parents. It became quickly apparent that I could not give what I did not have. Discretionary time was minimal. There was no time or option to go to a gym.

My father had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. As I was teaching one to walk I was also watching as the metastasis to my father’s brain robbed him of his mobility. One afternoon, when all 230# of my father fell, I lifted him.  In doing so, however, I realized that I had placed myself at risk. Had I injured myself, what good would I have been to anyone else? What did I need to do to protect myself from potential injury in future scenarios? I began implementing strengthening and core training that very night.

Initially derived out of fear of injury, this core workout fed my physical body.  I became stronger. However, one aspect took me by surprise. Over time a gentle craving began to form. This workout became my sanctuary. This routine, even if completed in spare moments throughout the day, implemented a structure into a world over which I felt I had lost total control. Not only physically but mentally and emotionally I became stronger, too. The three components, physical, mental & emotional, formed a somewhat solid foundation. I leaned into this workout which became an integral part of my day.

Eventually, the demands of motherhood and caring for my ailing father began to take its toll. Something was missing. Emotionally I began to feel saturated with grief, mentally I was overwhelmed. My exercises became my lifeboat…but even that started to sink.  My father died that October only to hear the news that my mother had 9 months to live.

I was consumed with grief and desolation to the point that I felt as though I was breathing through a straw. I needed something more.

Fast forward six months following my mother’s death, I was introduced to a woman who became my mentor. She taught me how to meditate and about the body’s innate wisdom imbedded in the human consciousness centers (chakras).  With practice and study the grief began to lift.

The demands on my time continued to press and the efficient sanctuary was born. As I began to combine the strengthening workout with postures, stretching and a new mindful awareness, it became clear that certain movements had the capacity to release emotional debris more quickly than thru just meditation alone. This mindful awareness lead me to interpret the movements through the lens of Spirit.

My life raft resumed buoyancy. The 30 minutes I had to myself during the day was devoted towards insuring my body, heart and mind stayed grounded, centered and strong. Having linked the needs of my body with that of my mind, heart and the support of Spirit was the answer. Amidst the turbulence and chaos formed wellbeing and peace. Fear and grief were transmuted into love.

I humbly extend the Mindful Movement DVD collection in memory of my parents. What was gleaned through their transitions delivered the highest possible outcome; Love In Action. It is my intimate experience with their passing that makes my work with Hospice so rewarding.

JewelTree Mindful Movement is dedicated to those yearning to restore all facets of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual integrity that lead to a life guided by love, peace and purpose.

When I tried this program, I had never taken a yoga class and wasn't currently serving as anyone's caregiver. So I wasn't sure how it would work for me. But I can say that it was AMAZING.

Julie leads you through a series of yoga moves--they are challenging, but not impossible for a beginner. I was pretty fit when I tried these DVDs, working out a few times a week with a trainer, but found that I still had to pay attention to what was being said and Julie's movements on screen to keep up. And that was the beautiful part for me--I HAD to pay attention, so I couldn't be in my head about what had happened at work or what so-and-so said or my 10-year life plan. Julie offers not only a workout, but a challenge to stay in the moment, and that was my favorite part.

She starts the DVD with a meditation that lasts a few minutes. I really liked the meditation, but I admit that I skipped it when I was in a hurry. I liked that I could choose which parts to do and how much time to devote to it. The whole program lasts only 30 minutes, so it's an easy way to start a yoga program or just a way to separate from your thoughts for a bit and FEEL better. I bet this would be really great for people who want to meditate more as well!

All in all, this is a GREAT DVD, and I would recommend it for anyone starting out in yoga or mindfulness, or who needed to build their muscles for caregiving purposes. You don't need to be physically fit or a yoga expert. (But if you are, I'd suggest moving on to Mindful Movement 2. It's the same great program but with more challenging moves, and I bought mine online. It's available on Amazon as well.)

I don't usually take the time to write a review but in this case I felt it imperative as both of the JewelTree DVD's reinforced for me just how easy it can be to attain a heightened sense of peace and well-being in spite of myself, in what I often term as the "hampster wheel" I unfortunately find myself on! The movements are very well "scripted" for any level of yogi and help to connect holistically to the actual-time that I find it important to BE within. This drew me out of the catch-22 of mindless chatter harassing me about the Past or Future of my day and into the Peace and Wellbeing of the present moment, instead. You have to love that no matter what situation you find yourself in. Thanks, JewelTree!

Having gone through a time where keeping myself energetic enough to care for someone, I was curious how this program would work. I was very pleased with it's ability to acknowledge the emotional, spiritual and physical buckets that need filling at a time of quick depletion. The creator, Julie Bowes, clearly leads by example as she comes across with serenity, confidence and strength. Not to mention she is extremely physically fit! It appears self-produced which adds to the authenticity of her offering. I highly recommend this program to people who could use help in taking care of themselves in all dimensions, and also during times of great care giving stress (or stress in general)!

This video has achieved something new to me. Somehow, Jewel Tree has managed to create a form of exercise that gives you a sense of purpose with each movement. It is not the typical mindless movement-that is a drudgery. Instead, you may actually look forward to the workout because there is meaning and nurturing with each movement. You feel like she is there with you every step of the way.
I rate this video a 5 plus for content, and a 4 due to the production/sound quality. Please don't let that deter you from buying this amazing, unique video. This is soooo worthy for anyone who wishes to be cared for, to be fit, to feel a sense of peace.

It is obvious that the creator of the Mindful Movement DVD, Julie Bowes, is someone who can relate to the stress of being a caregiver and realizes the importance of taking timeout for one’s own nourishment. Her genuine concern for other caregivers is apparent in her gentle encouragement and peaceful state of mind throughout the DVD. She offers a calm moment away from your cares and the opportunity to take time for yourself to breathe and move freely. As she implies, the practice should be undertaken with mindfulness and an awareness of one’s individual body. What an inspiration!

It was a true friend who first introduced me to Mindful Movement. I had grown dissatisified with yoga and was almost too overweight to do anything aerobic. The program worked for me by making it easy and beautiful to watch while participating in the various exercises. I especially love the way Julie (the instructor) got me to think about my body in a new way, which allowed me to take my mind off its deficiencies and focus on my inner beauty. If you need the benefit of a quick home workout, but want the caring, of a certified life coach, Mindful Movement is for you.

This is such a nicely done DVD! Such a nice tool made for caregivers to remind us to stop and breathe and take care of ourselves also. The routine is not too long so you really can do it while your loved one is napping. Julie has such a calming presence that you feel like she is in the room with you and knows exactly what you are going thru! Having said that you do not need to be caregiving for someone to get a lot put if this wonderful DVD. It was also not too hard for me to do the routine which is important to me. Can't go wrong with this Mindful Movement DVD!

This DVD is for anyone who wants to benefit from yoga and learn from an excellent teacher who presents in a very genuine, caring way. The only reason why I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is if you are looking for a fancily produced DVD, this isn't that kind of a DVD. If you're looking for an excellent instructional video from someone who embodies what yoga can do to keep you fit and vital, this DVD is for you.

This is a terrific DVD. I am not a caregiver, but I was looking for a simple routine to do by myself at home and this is perfect. Julie is calm and gentle and I love that the yoga poses don't have fancy yoga names. They have names like 'Persistence'...I loved that. The fact that the setting is outdoor just added to the whole experience for me. Well done.

First of all, my review of Mindful Movement 1 pertains to this one as well: "Having gone through a time where keeping myself energetic enough to care for someone, I was curious how this program would work. I was very pleased with it's ability to acknowledge the emotional, spiritual and physical buckets that need filling at a time of quick depletion. The creator, Julie Bowes, clearly leads by example as she comes across with serenity, confidence and strength. Not to mention she is extremely physically fit! I highly recommend this program to people who could use help in taking care of themselves in all dimensions, and also during times of great care giving stress (or stress in general)!" Now onto Mindful Movement 2: I used Mindful Movement 1 for about 2 months before wanting to go the next step. Julie filmed this in Hawaii, so it's a beautiful background! She challenges you in just the right amounts and continues to offer the multidimensional support (physical, emotional, spiritual). Do you see the picture on the cover? That's really her! Don't you want that physique? This DVD is how you get it - with the added bonus of the serenity as a result of the meditative quality of the program.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great next step
By Abby1
This review is from: Mindful Movement 2 (DVD)
This DVD is the next step after Mindful Movement 1. If you are a beginner, you should probably start over there. But I tried this DVD after I got the hang of Mindful Movement 1, and it was a great transition.

The moves are similar, but more intense than 1. For me, they required much more focus and offered a workout that was just a bit more strenuous. You don't have to be a yoga expert to do these DVDs, but if you are looking for a 30-minute boost during the day, a short break from your thoughts (I really had to concentrate), or an effective workout you can do with nothing more than a yoga mat, this is a great option.

I like that these DVDs seem to be self-produced, because then you know that they WORK for Julie, who stars in them. If you are looking for workout models smiling on screen through their workout, this is not for you. But if you are looking for a program that actually works in real life, this is a great one. I always felt stronger and more focused after it was over, and I recommend it to all my friends who work out regularly or are more experienced at yoga.

It is obvious that the creator of the Mindful Movement 2 DVD, Julie Bowes, is someone who can relate to the stress of being a caregiver and realizes the importance of taking timeout for one’s own nourishment. Her genuine concern for other caregivers is apparent in her gentle encouragement and peaceful state of mind throughout the DVD. She offers a calm moment away from your cares and the opportunity to take time for yourself to breathe and move freely. In this 2nd DVD in the series, Julie offers more words of advice and inspiration and picks the physical practice up a notch by adding more difficulty. As she implies, the practice should be undertaken with mindfulness and an awareness of one’s individual body. Her quest to nurture the caregiver is very inspirational!

My wife (Fit not Fat) tried Mindful Movement 1, and seeing her reaction, got me to try #2. Seeing the success she had in losing weight without making it a chore was a real change. I tried the second disk, and found it strenuous and a good workout. It's something a guy can do if he's flexible and needs to keep stretching his routine.

This DVD is the perfect follow up to Mindful Movement 1. The routine is definitely more advanced but not so hard I couldn't get it. Again Julie has such a calming and pleasant way about her, and it's filmed in Hawaii so you feel like you are right there with her. well done!

I loved this 2nd edition because version 1 was getting a bit easy, I have now given up my gym membership and needed to push myself a bit harder. Its a great DVD and even though I am not a caregiver, I love that I dont need to go anywhere to do my workout.
